St. John's College Magazine

VOL LXXXVII **** DECEMBER **** 1994/95/96

We pray

For all who are wronged, oppressed, defrauded, or betrayed defend them from despair and anger.

For all who are downcast by fruitless toils or shattered hopes, who hurt and bruised in spirit, serve without thank% and toil without recompense : preserve them by thy good spirit from utter grief of heart.

For all who are friendless and homeless, the refugees, the wanderers and the prisoners, succour them.
O Lord, and have pity on every waif and child of misery.

For all who are left behind and forgotten, all who are alone and afraid, the defeated, the timid, the broken - hearted befriend, comfort and abide with them.

Editorial Notes

Magazine

We apologize to the readers, more particularly to the Old Boys and parents on the delay in publishing the College magazine. Preparations were made to release it by December l995. All materials were collected, edited and the first instalment of articles were handed over to the press. Rest of the articles, including the editorial wore in the editors file in the college office. But as everybody now knows most of the files in the college office are missing. But the articles and blocks handed over to the press were safe with them. We have now decided to release 94, 95 magazine with what is available. Since there were no major College activities during 1996, we have included for record purposes, events that took place in 1996 at College, Hence this number includes three years of College activities.

We regret in not including our usual sections like old boys news, games and athletics, OBA reports, etc.

Juhilarians

Our congratulations to our principal Mr.S.Thanapalan and Mr. J. Amalaseelan on completing twenty five years of dedicated service to the College. Colleagues assess their contributions in the pages to follow.

Congratulations

Mr. N. J. Gnanaponrajah of our staff was ordained deacon on Wednesday 29th May 1996 at an impressive service conducted by the Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Revd Kenneth Fernando at Thanniyootu. We wish him well in his pastoral duties.

Retirement,

Three of our senior teachers with more than twenty five years each of dedicated service to the college have retired from service Mr S.K. Mahalingam teacher of English, Mr.A. K. Thambirajah also our teacher of English. Mr. N. Mvlvaganam history and social studies and Mrs V.P . Sugirtharatnarn of the primary school have retired. Due to the political climate in the north same of our teachers are still out of the peninsula and we hope they will return to us at lie earliest.

Mr. P. S. Arulrajah of the Welfare Office, Mr.M. Nadarajah of the College Office, and Mr. M. Kurusamy of the College tuck shop have also decided to leave us. We thank them for their services and wish them a well-earned retired life.

Bereavements

Mr. S. A. Ganeshwaran

We deeply regret to record the untimely passing away of Mr. S. A. Ganeshwaran, the Principal's Secretary from 1983, on 16 tit of November 1995 at Karunanilayam, Kilinochchi, of heart attack. The mental and physical strains of October events would have probably caused his passing away. Mrs. H. Pirabaharan assesses his contributions to the college, particularly to the smooth functioning of the office, in this number. We extend to his children our deepest sympathies.

Mas. K. Biranavan

Advanced level first year student passed away in October 1996 under mysterious circumstances.
A disciplined, studious and amiable student that he was we are deeply grieved over his untimely demise.

May his soul rest in peace.

Mr. M. Wijeyaratnam

We regret to record the sudden passing away of Mr. M. Wijeyaratnam, a very loyal old boy of the college. During his student days he was a football player of repute who represented the college first eleven team and was selected to represent the Sri Lanka Schools team. On leaving school he took over is noted family business in the north and south. He was an active member of the Old Boys Association of South Ceylon and was vice president for some years. The imposing cricket score board of the College is a testimony to his loyalty to his alma mater. His hospitality had no limits. He accommodated Johnians young and old in his spacious house at Colpetty till they found a permanent residence in Colombo. We extend our deepest sympathies to the members of his family.

Damages to College

During the I P K F operation in October 1987 St. John's was at the receiving end of many shells and as a result many buildings "ere badly damaged and the biological laboratory was erased to the grounds. But repairs were effected and a new science block is coming up. But the destruction caused by the Riverasa I operation is so severe not only to buildings but even to movable properties of the College. Documentary records, laboratory equipments and furniture were destroyed or removed. The Jubilee Hall, the library block, memorial block, hostel, kitchen and the Evarts building were so badly damaged that the estimated cost of reconstruction, repairs and re-equipments is estimated to cost ten million rupees. Due to the untiring efforts of the Principal most of the minor repairs have been effected and .repairs of the major damages is in progress. We appeal to old boys, parents and friends to rally round the Principal in putting back to shape our college.

Pocket Schools

Due to the military operation in Jaffna during October, November and December months almost all our students were displaced and found shelter in Vadamarachy, Thenmarachy and Kilinochchi areas. Being interested in the education of our children, decision was made to set up pocket schools in the said areas with the Principal of St, John's College to look after the interests of both schools. On 17th April pocket schools combining St. John's and Chundikuli Girls College students were set up. Unfortunately Thenmarachy and Vadamarachy branches bad to be closed after two days due to military operations then. But the branch at Kilinochchi went on till July 1996. We take this opportunity to thank the Warden of the Karuna Nilayam, Kilinochchi who very magnanimously spared us her premises to run the school. We also thank Mr. P. Baskaran, Mr. S. Sivasubramaniam, Mr. A. Rajaratnam and Mr. M. Niruparan who helped us by lending their premises to run the schools.

Chairman - Governing Body

Our congratulations and best wishes to Dr E. S. Thevasagayarn, old boy, old teacher and a former Principal of our College on his selection as the Chairman of Governing Body for the Educational Institutions founded by C M 8 in Ceylon. There have been only three laymen to occupy the prestigious position during the last hundred and fifty years~ Prof. J. L. C. Rodrigo, Prof. C. C. De Silva and Dr. Thevasagayam. We feel proud on the honour bestowed on him.

Visitors to the College
We were happy over the visit of dignitaries interested in Education in general and St. John's in particular in the course of 1996 The Bishop of Colombo Rt Revd Kenneth Fernando accompanied by Ven J. Sarvanantha, Archdeacon of Jaffna and Dr. E 5. Thevasagayam visited the College on Wednesday, 19th June 1996. They were able to make on the spot study of the damages suffered by the College

Acknowledgements:

Every body knows that life during the last decade was not normal in the North and publishing the College Magazine has been a herculean task. Still, we have tried our utmost to publish it regularly. Ever mindful of the needs and aspirations of the Old Boys outside the peninsula, we introduced the publication of an abridged edition.

Time has come for the Editor to lay down his pen He takes this opportunity to thank all those who helped and guided him for twenty years as Editor (Tamil) from 1967 to 1974 and as Chief 1-ditor from 1985 to 1996. In particular he wishes to thank the former Principal Mr. T. Gunaseelan who was instrumental in persuading him to accept the responsibility of the College Magazine. His thanks are also due to Dr. E. S Thevasagayam, our former Principal and Mr. S. Thanapalan our present Principal for all the encouragement and guidance; Mr. M. S. Kathirgamathamby, the Tamil Editor; Mr. K. Ganeshalingam , the Business Manager; Editors and student Editors of the past and Mr J. T. Chelliah, our former Editor and Vice Principal for his valuable guidance and information about Old Boys overseas and all others who lightened his work. His grateful thanks are due to the members of the Staff of the College for their unstinted support and guidance.

Principal's Notes

The practice at St. John's has been that the Principal's report is usually presented at the Annual Prize Giving it of the College. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we could not have the prize Giving this year. Hence these notes for the College Magazine.

This report covers from the last Prize Giving held in May 1995 to 31st December 1996.

This review covers, one of the most significant periods in the history of the schools as well as the people in Jaffna. Since the failure of the cessation of hostilities between the Sri Lankan forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on 19th April 1995, conditions were moving towards a more tense situation and imminent signs of the war getting worse- This became evident towards the end of October 1995 and the people living in Valikamam area left for Vadamaradchi, Thenmaradchi and the Vanni.

The Principal, Vice Principals and some Members of the staff stayed at 'Karuna Nilayam" Kilinochchi and others at Thenmaradchi & Vadamaradchi with a few in other places. At the Governing Body meeting hold in March 1996 it was decided to open pocket schools at Point Pedro, Meesalai and Karuna Nilayam with both St. John's and Chundikuli functioning together. Plans were drawn out by the Principal of St. John's with the help of the vice Principals and Teachers of the two schools and the Principal of St. Johns was to oversea all three places.

On the 17th of April 1996, the schools started functioning simultaneously at all three places. Hardly two days did the schools in the peninsula function, as on the 19th of April, Military operations commenced again. Schools were closed except in Kilinochchi which continued to function fill July. Here in the peninsula, people started moving back to the Valikamam area from the 20th to settle down in their homes.

1 moved into the school premises with a few members of the staff on the 27th of April. The whole place appeared half jungle with shrubs all over and almost all the buildings badly damaged. We straight away swung into action with a few senior boys and cleared enough area to re-open school on the 13th of May. During the first month, attendance was around 45%, but steadily increased to more than 75% by the end of the year.

Staff Changes - Tutorial

This period too has seen the usual changes in staff. Out of the four retirements. three were jubilarians. Mr. S. K. Mahalingam retired in December 1995. Better known in the field of sports in his early days, he started his career at school as a Physical Training Instructor, coaching the 1st XI Cricket, Soccer and college Athletic teams. On retirement, he has already made his mark as a very successful and popular teacher of English.

Mr. Alex Thambirajah also retired in December 1995. He proved to be an exemplary teacher of English. His method of approach and way of presentation was extraordinary and the students, I am sure will feet his absence.

Mr. N. Mylvaganam, an outstanding teacher of social studies is an author of many publications in the subject and his books have been well received in many parts of the Island. He retired in September this year for personal reasons.

In addition to the three jubilarians mentioned above, Mrs. V. P. Sugirtharatnam also left us in 1994 after twelve years of loyal and devoted services in the Primary School. She was a strict disciplinarian and one of those who was always ready to give a helping hand in the extra activities of the school.

We thank all these teachers for their unstinted services and wish them well for happy and healthy retired life.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all teachers who served us on temporary capacity during this period. The time of service had been short and the number too many, to mention their names. However we trust that they enjoyed their stay and gained valuable experience.

Non Tutorial

As on the tutorial, here too three jubilarians retired from service and we lost one.

Mr. S. A. Ganeshwaran, Principal's Secretary passed away at Karuna Nilayam in November 1995. He was so efficient that his work was precise. It is going to be an uphill task to fill his place. We extend our deepest sympathy to his children.

Mr. P. S. Arulraj who worked in the Welfare Office retired in February 1996. He was such a loyal and dedicated worker that any Principal should consider it a privilege having hint in office.

Mr. M. Nadarajah, an old boy of the school was another faithful worker. He was in charge of collecting fees and maintaining hostel accounts.

Mr. M. Kurusamy, our canteen manager was the third jubilarian to retire. He was well liked by teachers & students for his cordiality.

We wish all three of them a happy and useful retired life.

Visitors to School

The Hon. Minister of Education & Higher Education visited the school on the 17th of May with the Deputy Minister Prof. Vishva Warnapala and Provincial Director, North East Province, Miss T. Periyathamby.

His Lordship, the Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Rev. Kenneth M. J. Fernando along with the Chairman of the Governing Body and the Archdeacon of Jaffna were here from the 17th to 19th June.

His Excellency the High Commissioner for the U.K. in Sri Lanka, Mr. David Tatham visited us on the 3)st October. They were all sympathetic towards us and were very much concerned about our future. We thank them for their visit and would appreciate any assistance that would come forth.

PRINCIPAL' S COMMENTS
1997 - Year of Education Reforms

The present Government has declared 1997 as the year of Education Reforms. It has been the Policy of successive Governments to bring changes in education. Some continue but some given up. (Eg - The N. C. G. E & . N. C. E. introduced in the 70's were completely changed and the earlier system of GCE. (O/L) and (A/L) were re-introduced-arid they continue.

Planning in Educational changes should be meticulous as it involves the future generation and also determines the future of the nation Our fervent hope is that the pupils will not become pawns in the hands of the so called pundits of Educational Reforms.

Salary Anomalies

The burning question in the minds and the bleeding wound in the hearts of the teachers in the state assisted private schools is the gross injustice done in the implementation of the new salary scales for teachers introduced by the present Government on 01.01. 1995.

The anomaly is so alarming that the maximum difference is as great as the "Grand Canyon" for the teachers but only a drop in the ocean for the Government.

Representations, appeals and memoranda are being sent to the relevant authorities, placing faith on them that the matter would be given due attention. While action is being taken, the teachers concerned are waiting in earnest for salvation.

Future Plans

St. John's has been at the receiving end during this past decade, suffering severe damages due to the on going civil war. in 1987, during the 1. P. K. F. operations, buildings and equipments were shattered with damages running into millions. Before we could recuperate, we suffered further and damages ill 1995 worse.

Our priority is to bring some of the damaged buildings back to shape, one of them being the Peto Memorial Hall .Buildings like the kitchen, servants quarters, section of the primary school are beyond repairs and need new structures Plans would be drawn for them at suitable locations. Other plans for the school include new blocks for administration, library, junior laboratory, aesthetic studies and indoor sports cornplex.

While St. John's goes into its 175th year in 1998 and leaps forward into the 21st century, we trust in God. that conditions would give way to fulfill these plans and continue the ideals of the missionaries who established this noble institution.

Acknowledgements

I wish to profusely thank all parents who contributed towards school d-velopment. It is through their generous gesture, we were able to effect all urgent repairs. Their names appear elsewhere in this issue.

For the continued support of the C. C. F. C. inspite of the recession in Canada.

Those who helped us to run our schools during displacement, the Warden of -Karuna Nitayam in particular and our College Chaplain Rev. S. P. Nesakumar for providing shelter at a tirne when to those needed who needed it.

To his Lordship the Bishop and the Governing Body for the continued support; the Director of Education and his staff; the Government Agent. Jaffna & Project Director; a Special word of thanks to all the staff tutorial and non tutorial for rallying around at a time of crisis and giving their best of support.

To the editors of the Magazine Mr. S. Kanapathippillai and Mr. M. S. Kathirgamathamby for their super effort put in to collect back all records that were lost to bring out this issue.

Prize Day Address

by

Dr. A. J. V. Chandrakanthan

Mr.Chairman
Dear Principal
Reverend Sisters and Fathers
Members of The staff of St. John's College
Distinguished guests, Parents and
students

First of all I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the principal. the staff and the Members of the Board of management of this noble and prestigious institution for honouring me by inviting me to be the Chief Guest at this Annual Prize Giving function. I also wish to express my sincere congratulations to all the prize winners.

This illustrious institution situated in the heart of the city of Jaffna has made excellent and praiseworthy contributions toward the advancement of knowledge and culture, science and arts, both within and without the Tamil - speaking regions of this nation, Numerous are the professionals, administrators and academics who have had a sound and serene educational foundation at this institution. Many who have passed through the portals of this temple of learning have served and continue to serve as academics, but it has also nurtured one of the most outstanding Tamil politicians of this century. He is none other than the Late Mr, Samuel James Velupillai Chelvanayagam. The Tamils of Sri Lanka endearingly call him Thanthai Chelva. His prophetic vision and political wisdom bad undoubtedly given elan and urgency to the contemporary search for the manifold layers of Tamil nationalism.

I chose to speak of him this morning for three important reasons.

The first one is that we are living through a period of intense political activism. Our conversations and discussions, and even our ordinary day to day decisions are to a great extent determined by the socio - political process that is evolving around us. A multi - dimensional search for ethnic identity coupled with linguistic nationalist sentiments have become pace - setters of our current history and national policy in the last quarter
of this century.

Secondly whether we accept it or not, whether we are conscious or not we are living through a phase Of history that is deeply saturated with a vibrant form of political education touching every fact of life. A political phenomenon that we hardly ever imagined or encountered in our student days in the 1960s and 1970s has now become an integral part of school-life with all its challenges and consequences.

It is in such a context of change and challenge that I would like to place a visionary like Mr.Chelvanayagam who not only stand out as a significant model but his life and values, his career and character in such a context attain a lasting value.

Thirdly we shall be soon preparing ourselves to celebrate the centenary of the birth of this prophet whose messiannic vision seems to out -live him with greater force and ferocity.

There are three traits of his personality that I find are extremely relevant to our student community as well as to teachers and others who are engaged in the service of imparting knowledge. It might interest you to know that the crucial years of his personal, religious and intellectual formation were spent within these very premises of this prestigious institution. It was here that he received his Junior Secondary Education. The humanitarian values, the religious ethos and the political ethics that he practised were learnt in the premises.

Mr. S J.V. Chelvanayagam was a very religious person who struggled to combine day to day life with the faith convictions that he subscribed unto. For him faith and religion couldn't be confined merely to pietistic practices and abstract credos. Political convictions, economic compulsions and social concerns were understood by him as integral part of life that needed an ethical and religious response.

Secondly he counted politics as an apostolate and an avenue of service to humanity. At a time when political rhetoric was used as a vehicle for opportunism, patronage and populism he opted for a different style of political philosophv. His career and character were moulded and shaped by a deep sense of personal identification with the people, their anxieties and aspirations. He was an eminent Tamil politician whose elegance and eloquence bad a profound influence on the people whom he sought to lead and guide.

Thirdly he dedicated his entire life for the benefit of the Tamil community who he felt were denied their basic rights as a distinct national entity. His cultural and linguistic consciousness unveiled the simple but profound conviction that be sought to understand all that is human and all that makes a person human i.e. culture, ethos, language, religion, customs, social traditions etc as humanising elements galvanized by a sacred and divine aura. It was for this very reason that he was willing to absorb all that was noble and rich in the Hindu religious ethos. He never felt that the Hindu religious tradition was alien to his christian faith. He strongly adhered to what could be called a Tamil Hindu contextualism.

His life will undoubtedly continue to inspire us and any more gencrations in future. The convictions that he espoused will live and grow beyond this century

I would like to end my address with a quotation, taken from the book entitled, S. J. V. Chelvanayagam and the Crisis of Sri Lankan Tamil Nationalism, 1947 - 1977 A Political Biography. written by an eminent political scientist of international repute, Prof. A. Jeyaratnam Wilson, son - in - law of Mr. Chelvanayagam.

"There are times whets the needs of potentially extraordinary person and of history coincide and this occurred in the case of S J. V. Chclvanayagam. He was the right person at the right rime. History presented him with the opportunity to solve for his people what he failed to solve for himself, namely the need for a father in the home. Without sacrificing his own family, he became Thanthai Chelva (Father Chelva)- as the Tamil people called him -the caring father of his people."

May his commitment and dedication. service and selflessness continue to be a shining example to all of us.

Thank you one and all.

J U B I L A R I A N
Mr S.Thanapalan

A salient feature of a Private School is the longevity of service of its employees We at St. John's have the proud record of six jubilarians among the permanent tutorial staff The number increases to seven with Mr. S. Thanapalan, our Principal joining the galaxy of jubilarians.

Mr. Thanapalan is no stranger to the Johnian community. Joining the College as a student in January 1955 in standard four, he had his entire secondary education at St. John's. While at College, he was a popular student having been a boxer and a member of the second and first eleven cricket teams, As a student in the Advanced Level Arts Class, he evinced keenness in his studies. The writer remembers him as a young, energetic, studious student, always armed with ready wits. He was selected to the Peradeniya University in 1966 and came back to us with his Arts Degree as a teacher in 1970.

Tamil and Social Studies were his forte in the classrooms. To relieve the monotony of the subjects, he spiced his lessons with accounts of sportsmen and sports news. No wonder the students looked eagerly for his classes,

In 1980 he was appointed Prefect of Games - a position he held with great distinction till 1988. Added to this onerous responsibility another mantle was bestowed on him when he assumed duties as Supervisor of the Middie School from 1986 to 1988. During this period the administration of the College was convinced of his hard work and administrative capabilities and appointed him as the Co - Vice Principal in 1988 and subsequently in June 1990 appointed him Vice Principal.

June 1990 was not only an important landmark in the history of the country but also in the history of St. John's. The then Principal Dr. E. S. Thevasagayam was unable to perform his duties as resident Principal due to ill health and the conditions prevailing then here. Hence he operated from Colombo and Mr. Thanapalan was appointed Acting Principal in August ' 90 in which capacity he continued till April , 93.

The period between 191 to, 93 was not at all conducive to the educational field and to be an Acting Principal during the time was an ordeal, Mr. Thanapalan imbibed with tact and flexibility was able to hold the fort and steered the College in keeping with our traditions of the past. We are proud that under his dynamic leader ship, the standard ill the academic field and sports was maintained.

The first of May 1993 was a red letter day in the history of our College, it was on that date that Mr. Thanapalan was appointed Principal of the College. The St. John's community was in jubilation on his appointment which he richly deserved. The training he had as Middle School Supervisor and Vice Principal under his predecessors contributed abundantly to perform his duties as Principal.

As promotions came his way, he also enriched his academic achievements. In 1982 he was selected to undergo the Diploma in Education at the University of Jaffna and later in I988 he was selected by the Governing Body to follow a course leading to Diploma in Education and Religious Studies at West Hill College, University of Birmingham.

Mr. Thanapalan is a walking encyclopedia of games and athletics. The way he recounts international sports events of the past surprises everybody.

No wonder he was one the first national commentator at the Test Match between Sri Lanka and England in 1982 and later against Australia in 1983.1 Be it Cricket or Soccer or Hockey or Athletics, even the latest amended rules are at the tip of his fingers.

It is said that behind the success of every man there is a w man. But in Mr. Thanapalan's case, I would say that by the side of his success is Mrs. Prema Thanapalan. She is a tower of strength to him, sparing him full time towards the service of the College. We of the College congratulate Mr. Thanapalan on completing twentv five years of dedicated service to his Alma Mater and wish him many more years of service.

S. KANAPATHIPPIL LAI.

JUB I L A RI A N

Mr T Amalaseelan

We are proud to have our principal, Mr. S. Thanapalan and Mr. J. Amalaseelan joining the unique band of Jubilarians in our School, Only private schools like St John's can boast of having many jubilarians among the Staff. To fulfill the demand required for educating a child we should have permanent teachers who know the traditions of the School, have the knowledge of their students and the society they come from. So in our School we are having teachers with good experience and long reputed service and all of them aim at fulfilling the goals of education.

Mr. Amalaseelan joined the tutorial staff of our School in 1971. After graduating from the Peradeniya University of Ceylon he is now teaching Economics in the Advanced Level and Social Studies and 'I'amil in the Ordinary Level classes. As a teacher he always has the interest of the children in his heart and works hard for their progress. As a graduate with Diploma in Education he makes his lessons very lively and interesting. Students always look forward to his classes with enthusiasm. When there was a dearth for Hinduism teachers at our Secondary School Mr. Amalaseelan took it up as a challenge and taught the subject and won the admiration of the students and admini stration, eventhough he is a true Christian.

Mr. Amalaseelan has made valuable contributions to the physical education, and co-curricular activities at our School. As a first eleven foot ball coach, Basket ball coach for under 17, Master in charge of Chess club, Master in charge of Table tennis and Badminton and above all as the prefect of games his services to the school is commendable. As prefect of games he has always worked wholeheartedly towards the success of all his responsibilities like annual sports meet and organising all the inter school matches in our school. Organising our cricket match with Central College needs ability and due thought. He organises this match every year to the satisfaction of all concerned. His capacity for hard work and his innate tendency to shun the lime -light quite fitted him for the profession. Further inure Mr. Amalaseelan held the responsibility of vice patron of the following - Tamil Manram, Aquatic club, Catholic union and was in charge of Sea scouts.

As President of the Teachers Guild from 1937 to 1989 and as a senior member of the Teachers Guild he won the appreciation of the teachers and maintained goodwill among the staff both tutorial and non tutorial and the administration.. He found happiness in the path of duty and won the confidence and respect of his students and colleagues. Mr. Amalaseelan's faith in punctuality and regularity are worthy emulations. He never subscribed to the view that taking leave is a privilege of teachers. He would be seen in the College campus through out the day. Saturdays and Sundays are not off days for him. His services to sports in Jaffna are recognised by all and he was elected Secretary to the Jaffna Schools Cricket Association. He always exhibited his zeal in organization on all occasions.

Mr Amalaseelan has worked under fine Principals during the last twentv five years and won their respect and confidence - a testimony of his power of adaptability to changing situations

I wish him well on behalf of the school and may he enjoy health and strength to serve the College for many years to come.

K. Ganeshalingam

OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL SUPERVISOR

Mr Daniel Jeyakumar Thevathasan

All round ability, devotion to duty, a good understanding of child psychology and patience are the basic qualities necessary for a successful Primary School Headmaster. I take pride in saying that these are amply seen in Mr. D. J. Thevathason, a Johnian.

He passed out creditably as a Primary Trained Teacher from Columbuthurai Teachers' Training College and continued his teaching career in our College. As he is well aware and cherishes the time honoured traditions of St.John's he was made the master-in-charge of Thompson Hostel where he shirked no responsibility or duty. When he was Cub Master the Pack won the coveted trophy for the Best Cub Pack in Jaffna in 1978 and 1979. He was also the Scout Master where he made a mark.

He actively participated in the out. door games. He was the Cricket coach for the Under 13 and 17 teams and won many honours. It must be specially mentioned that he was the Secretary of Games of Primary School continuously till assuming as Head master,

A good teacher must always be learning, He must be ever ready to learn, enrich and widen his knowledge wherever and whenever there are opportunities. His short stint in Norway for eight months made this possible and the students gained when he joined us again.

He also served as Secretary of Teachers' Guild, Hurry. General Secretary of Jaffna Y \I C A 1975 - 1980 and an active member of the Wisemen Club. These show that his activities were not only within but beyond the College.

His sterling qualities, selfless service and generosity is well rewarded when we see that Almighty has showered on his family the choicest blessings of health, wealth and happiness.

As a true and faithful Christian and as Headmaster he guides and counsels the teachers and students with polite but stern discipline, love, kindness and understanding. Further. more he himself is a teacher not "made" but "born". May God bless him and his family for him to serve his Alma Mater for many more years to come.

R. Ragunathan

RETIREMENT

Mr S.K. Mahalingam

Mr. Mahalingam is one of our most outstanding product of St. John's the College with an identity of its own and rich in tradition, has produced in the recent past. Having been associated with the college for forty seven years both as a student and teacher, he has left behind indelible imprints.

During his student days from 1944 to 1954 his records and achievements in the field of sports are worthy recalling. He was a leading member of the Football, Cricket and Athletic teams and captained the last two. He was select-Id All - round sportsman of the years 1952 & 53. His achievements in games and athletics earned him a prefectship in the College.

Mr. Mahalingam was a popular personality among the Football fans of Jaffna. He was a member of tit c Jaffna District Football Team for many years and later contained the same team. Many Football fans of the past recollect even today his powerful and perfect corner kicks and his beautiful art of playing the bal without touching his opponents.

On completion of the course in Y. M. C, A College of Physical Education, Saidapet, he joined the staff of CMS English School, Kaithady, and was transferred to St. John's in 1959. His association with St. Johns as a teacher in the earlier period was in sports and games. He was a dedicated coach of Football, Cricket and Athletics teams. While imparting the techniques of the games he emphasised on discipline of the students.

In 1969 he passed out of the Palaly Teachers College as a specialist Trained English teacher. In the fifties and early sixties Mr. Mahalingam was a very popular figure in the field of sports but now he is very popular and demanding teacher of English.

Mr. Mahalingam retired from St. Johns in 1995 but he still countinues to be a teacher of English in Jaffna. On behalf of the College I extend to him our sincere thanks for all his contributions to the College and wish him a well -earned retired life.

J. Amalaseelan.

RETIREMENT

Mr. Alex K. Thambirajah

I am happy and proud to contribute this article about my esteemed teacher and guide Mr. A. K. Thambirajah who retires from service after thirty years of successful teaching career at our College. I still have vivid memories of my studentship under him in 1965 when he returned to St. John's from Peradeniya after graduation. His association with the College as a student also requires recollection in that he excelled in sports activities particularly in Badminton and Table Tennis. He continued his interest in sports at the Peradeniya Campus where he gained distinction in these games.

While serving as a member of the staff he was also a Member of the Advisory Committee of the College and shared the responsibility of encouraging the students to maintain the highest traditions of our institution. He also functioned as Hostel Master, and Master - in - Charge of Polo house which came to the forefront on account of his untiring efforts.

While serving in the games committee of the College, he was responsible for introducing new measures to improve the standard of the College games and sports. It was during the time that he ably coached Chandi Veerasingam in Badminton and enabled him to represent St. John's College at the All Ceylon Schools Badminton tournament and secure the coveted title of Badminton Champion.

His write up in the College Magazine in 1971 about my sports activities encouraged me to greater efforts which contributed to my entry into Ceylon National Soccer team.

Mr. Thambirajah also functioned as Vice Patron of the Advanced Level Students Union and was very liberal in rendering admonition and encouragement whenever and wherever necessary.

He further functioned as Sports Correspondent of the Lake House News papers whereby much prominence
was given to the sports activities of the various schools and sports clubs of Jaffna on an island wide basis. His contribution was well received as being fair and just by the reading public of Jaffna.

His teaching career at the College has been colourful in that he even used colour-chalks to explain difficult words and phrases while teaching English grammar. He took personal interest in each of his students and gave encouragement and advice whenever required. As a result of his energetic efforts many of his students secured high grades in English at the G. C. E (O/L) examinations. His students fondly remember him as a Model Teacher who was always kind and sympathetic in every situation and looked after their interests even at personal cost.

While teaching English to his students he also instructed them on current topics of general interest and widened their knowledge and understanding on men and matters around the world.

Mr. Thambirajah's retirement from service is indeed a great loss to the College which cannot be adequately compensated. However certain events must find fulfilment, thereby creating new avenues and opportunities to the younger generation.

I join the College community in wishing our revered teacher, Mr. Thambirajah many years of happy and healthy retirement, which he proposes to spend in religious activities as a lay preacher in the Christian Church in extending the kingdom of Lord Jesus.

Mr P.S. Arulrajah

"WORK IS WORSHIP", is the motto of it's life'

Mr. Arulrai, as the Private Secretary from 1962 to 1984. has won the confidence of the Principals in his sensitive role.

In 1986, he came back to us to fill the dual role of the Welfare Officer and the Officer in charge of the C C F C. In this capacity, he was a vital link between the School and the Christian Children Fund of Canada. This work demands a high degree of competence, devotion and sincerity, qualities which were found in him in great measure. He made no secret that his strength came from his God Jesus Christ.

His own life has been true to the old saying "One's own child is rewarded, when one looks after the others'. Both his sons are abroad in high positions and his only daughter is a Doctor, married to a Doctor.

May I personally take this opportunity to thank him for the help and guidance, he gave me. His kind words and a ready smile took away much of the strain of my work,

We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation of his services to the College and particularly to the Welfare Office.

We wish him and his family all the best. May the Almighty shower his blessings abundantly upon him and his family.

Dr. Jeyakularajah who has changed seats with the Chairman as Chief Guest for this function is a very close friend of mine, an old boy and Manager of the School. If I am to furnish information about him, it may run through Pages and cover more than half my report but considering the time factor, I shall be brief.

Having bad your early education in Batticaloa, you joined St John's and entered the Colombo Medical Faculty. Your first appointment was at Trincomalee and later you joined the Mineral Sands Corporation as Medical Officer. The concern for your own people and the will to serve them saw you take up an appointment at Puttur Methodist Mission Hospital.

You have widely travelled, visiting many European countries on behalf of the T. R. 0. You politely refused any asylum in the West and returned to your own land in 1987 under a general amnesty, and took up an appointment as Medical Superintendent at Private Hospitals Limited, Anaipanthy.

At a prominent social worker, you hold key positions in seyeral organisations. Manager Nuffield School, Kaithady, President Y. M. C. A. Jaffna, Jaffna Christian Union, Jaffna District Amateur Athletic Association & Patron Jaffna Football League are a few to mention. As a reward for your untiring & unstintcd service towards society you have been awarded the coveted "Maharaa yaarl" by the Ahila llangai Kamban Kazaham.

We salute Mrs. Christina Gnanathilakarani Jeyakularajah who crossed every bridge with courage and determination wherever the situation demanded. Her acquaintance with St. John's is equal to that of her husband. As Science Graduate. she is on the staff of Holy Family Convent, Jaffna. While the students are anxiously waiting to receive the prizes from her, we gladly welcome them both.

Accommodated on the platform are the Director of Education, Zone I, Mr, E. Sivanantban, another distinguished old boy, and a former member of the staff, Mr. A. Kadirgamar, Chairman, Advisory Body for St. John's, Mr. K. Somasundaram, President 0. B. A. Jaffna and Dr. Suraj Somasundaram. We happily welcome them.

PRINCIPAL'S COMMENTS:

Ladies and Gentlemen the report submitted just now, I am sure, would have given you a true picture of the progress of the School.

In the midst of many drawbacks beyond our control, St: John's has been able to maintain her standards
both in studies and sports. In this context it is gratifying to receive letters of encouragement from many.
One such letter worth mentioning was from one of our illustrious Principals of the past, Mr. K. Pooranampillai. He writes from U. K. to say "I got the S. J. C. Magazine and sat down to reading it as soon as I got it. It must be very taxing job to run a School like St. John's in those difficult times. All the more credit to you and your Staff, that inspire of the difficulties, St. John's flag keeps flying. I noted that S. J. C 's results at the G. C. E. (A/ L) Examination, percentage wise, continues to be as good as ever before. Congratulations on a "proud achievement".

Brick and mortar do not alone make a School. Life for an Institution is introduced by a variety of factors, including the richness of its traditions, the educational attainments in the class room, the sportsmanship displayed on and off the field and character displayed at all time by its students, the quality of the teaching process by the dedicated band of teachers, the bond of fellowship between the parents and the School and the loyalty of the Old Boys. All these go to give a new dimension to a School. These qualities should be seen continuously over the years, perhaps for centuries - and not be confined to a single year or during the tenure of a Principal.

As parents and Old Boys, you have a dynamic role to play in the life of the School .Your positive suggestions
will mean much to us. Be faithful witnesses of the School which you belong to. Your comments on the School
should enhance the reputation and not tarnish its image. Remember you are the vital member of the body
of the School charged with the responsibility of improving the quality of life. You are a bridge between the
past and the present. Let us join hands and lend a meaningful support to build an even better St. John's.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT :

It is my duty to express my sincere thanks to the Governing Body, the Advisory Board and the Manager for their guidance and support, to the Director of Education and his staff for their willingness to help at all times to our vice Principals and Sectional Heads ;Teachers - in - charge and office Bearers of various Clubs and Societies; to all meynbers of the Staff, Tutorial and Non - Tutorial; members of the Prefect Body and everyone in general for their loyal and devoted service.

Old Boys, Parents and Friends , we thank you for your unstinted support. A special word of thanks to all donors towards the Prize Fund and Endowments.

May St. John's continue to be inspired by the zeal of the Missionaries of yesteryear as it moves towards the 175th year of its founding in 1998 and very specially as it enters the daunting task of the twenty first century.

May the lord give us the courage and wisdom to take up this new challenge.

May the lord bless you all.

Thank you.

Prize Day Address

by

Dr. T. W. Jeyakularajah

Rev. Chairman, Honoured Principal Sir, Our loyal old boy & the new Director of Education Zone I- Mr. R. Sivanandan, Dr. Suraj Somasundaram, Learned teachers of St John's. beloved Students, Privileged parents, prestigious members of the OBA, Lord Bishops, members of the Clergy, Distinguished Guests and My dear friends.

I consider this as a great privilege and honour to be the Chief Guest of this prestigious institution on the Prize day celebrations, which is the most important and colourful annual event in your College calendar.
My wife and I stand here much honoured by way of the colourful guard of honour, the smart procession
adorned by the College band, the garlands, the touching welcome song and the most kind words said about both of us. Whilst accepting your kindness and honour with great humility, we will not forget this day, I assure you, and will be ever so grateful to you always. I thank you Mister Principal, Members of the Staff and the Student body most sincerely for this great honour.

My happiness this morning becomes manifold as I stand here not merely as the Chief Guest, but also as a loyal boy of this great institution.

What I am today is, attributable chiefly to this great College. The Mahara Yarl award that you mentioned a little while ago, I am sure was given to me because of the right values that I learnt within the four walls of this noble Institution.

I very gratefully recollect my student days here at St. John's, nearly thirty eight years ago. I had studied under three eminent principals, the Late Rev. J.T. Arulanandam, Late Mr .P.T.Mathai and Late Mr.A.W. Rajasekeram. As most of you know all of them with different distinctions, were great men in their own right. The piety of J.T., the versatility of P.T. and the simplicity of A.W.R., I can never forget.

Some of the Gurus' of that time were remarkable men. We nicknamed them all but respected them fully and adore them even today.

Messrs. J.T.Chelliab, J.N Ponniah, K. Paramothayam, S. Panchalingam, M.C.Francis, Y.Edwin, V. R.
Amarasingham, Late Mr. C. J. Elayathamby, Late Mr. T.K Rajamarthandan, Late Mr. C. E. Anandarajan,
Late Mr. W.T Gunaratnam and Late Mr. N. E. Jeyasingham are some of my great teachers, I never forget. I will remember them always with deep gratitude and respect. Out of these great men at least Mr. S. Panchalingam, I am very happy, is here with us today in this audience.

He was Physics teacher at the A/ L class. and was a great sportsman of his time. He was a teacher with a, serious mind but had lot of understanding for his students. Not only he imparted knowledge, but also helped a great deal in the sports field particularly in Athletics, Soccer & Volley ball.

He was in charge of the hostel meals and my mouth still waters when I think of his Sunday menu. I wish him with affection and respect, many years of fruitful retired life.

Today we are paying the price for the folly of neglecting the study of English Language. A false brand of patriotism was introduced by some cheap politicians to sustain their power and position. it is not patriotism but it was deceit highest order and hoodwinking of the innocent people of this nation, This policy makers sent their children and their close relatives to Oxford and Cambridge for English and higher education. It was the common man who finally suffered by this short sighted policy. The Educationists recommend English not for the love of it or for its superiority as a language Let us not even for a moment think they are less patrio-tic. On the contrary, they are more patriotic than the pretenders I would say.

Learning in one's tongue is the ideal form of education, they all say and we admit it.

But,
knowledge of English is important because it opens the way for wider perception. It is an International language, whether we like it or not. Very rapid scientific advancement take place more today than ever before. The translation to be made available in the Tamil medium takes a very long time and by then' further development and advancement have taken place already. The world community is moving faster and getting closer. If we are to keep pace with the other parts of the world in international relations or intellectual dialogue or anything else, a sound knowledge of English is a must.

Educationists and parents should be more vigilant. People should wake up from laziness and slumber and resist always with all their might .and courage whenever retrograde policies are introduced by mean men for cheap political gains.

There was a time when our standard of English was envied by other Asiatic countries and was appreciated by none other than the English themselves

I give you just one example to illustrate where we stand today. A newly passed out doctor wrote in his patient' a record sheet thus "out injury to the second finger of right feet" (instead of second toe of the right foot).

In order to rectify this sad situation, greater awareness should come from the parents and teachers. Another thing that I would like to impress upon the parents is the maintenance of discipline.

Today many of the parents are reluctant to discipline or reprimand their children for certain reasons. They expect the entire disciplining to be done by the School. Without the support & earnest cooperation of the parents, it will not be possible to maintain proper discipline.

A family without proper discipline, an Institution and a nation without discipline, I do not wish to imagine. I leave it to you.

Certain human qualities are very vital for the upliftment of the community. As these are not spontaneously forthcoming, it has to be consciously cultivated when it is deemed necessary. These then become values and virtues.

There is gloom, darkness and war clouds all around us. We cannot be aloof to what is happening. We need
leaders with wisdom. Wisdom is something very unique It is something much more and above the usual
knowledge. It's properties are ability to differentiate between right and wrong very clearly. It has clarity of
thinking and clear vision. It has far sightedness and fore sightedness. It's ways are always just and fair. Wisdorn is such an immense thing, people say that it comes to man only as a gift of God.

Whatever it be, the parents, teachers and the rulers are all leaders in some way and they should have wisdom, if the community is to prosper.

"Lux in Tennebris Lucet"

Let the light of St. John's that was kindled in 1823, shine ever brighter and dispel the gloom of darkness around us

I wish you well and let the blessings of God Almighty be with you always.

Thank you.
